About Formation Bible Study
Formation Bible Study is a progressive Bible study app built for serious Christians who want depth without needing a seminary degree. It bridges the gap between simple devotional apps (too shallow) and academic software (too complex). Formation Bible Study grows with you — from daily reading plans to deep inductive study — using the Berean Standard Bible as its foundation, guided by the Berean spirit of Acts 17:11: examining the Scriptures daily to see if these things are true.
Formation Bible Study is built for Christians aged 18–65 who are serious about their faith but not enrolled in seminary. This includes small group leaders who want to study deeper before they teach, growing Christians who find simple devotional apps too surface-level, and curious believers who have questions and want real answers rooted in Scripture. Formation Bible Study is not a children's app — for age requirements, see our Children's Privacy Notice.
Formation Bible Study launches with the Berean Standard Bible (BSB) — a modern, accurate, and freely available translation built for clarity and serious study. The BSB is openly licensed, which means Formation Bible Study can provide the full text without restriction. Additional translations will be added in future updates once licensing agreements are in place. We will never promise a translation until it is legally secured.
Most Bible apps measure streaks. Formation Bible Study measures depth. We don't reward you for opening the app every day — we build tools that help you actually understand and apply what you read. Formation Bible Study uses the Inductive Bible Study method (Observe → Interpret → Apply), four progressive learning levels, and an AI Study Assistant that stays inside the text with you. It's not just a reading app. It's a discipleship system.
Formation Bible Study is currently in active development with a target launch window of October 2026 – April 2027 on iOS (Apple App Store) and Android (Google Play). A beta testing phase on Apple TestFlight and Google Play Beta will precede the public launch. The best way to get early access is to join the waitlist — waitlist members are the first invited into beta and receive launch-day pricing.

When you cancel, your paid access continues through the end of your current billing period, and you will not be charged again. Your account then moves to the free plan. Formation Bible Study does not offer prorated refunds for the remaining days in a paid period, except in the specific circumstances outlined in our Billing Terms.
AI & Bible Study
The AI Study Assistant helps you go deeper into the passage you're studying — not replace your study. You can ask it to explain a word's original Hebrew or Greek meaning, show you how a passage connects to other Scripture, walk you through historical or cultural context, or help you think through how a passage applies to a real situation in your life. The AI works inside the text, not outside it. It is a study tool, not a teacher. The final authority is always Scripture itself. For a full disclosure of what the AI can and cannot do, see our AI Features Disclosure.
Formation Bible Study uses the Claude API by Anthropic to power its AI Study Assistant. Formation Bible Study is an independent product and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or partnered with Anthropic. We are transparent about this because we believe you have the right to know what processes your data. When you submit an AI query, your question and the relevant Bible passage are sent to Anthropic's servers for processing. We do not send your name, account details, notes, or payment information to Anthropic. Full details are in our AI Features Disclosure.
Inductive Bible study is a three-phase method of studying Scripture that lets the text speak for itself before you apply outside commentary. Formation Bible Study uses Observe → Interpret → Apply. Observe: What does the text actually say? (Read closely, note repeated words, mark key figures.) Interpret: What does the text mean? (Study context, original language, cross-references.) Apply: What does this mean for my life, my community, my obedience? This method is taught at every level from beginner to advanced — you don't have to be a scholar to use it.
Test it against Scripture — that is exactly what Formation Bible Study is designed to encourage. The Bereans in Acts 17:11 did not receive teaching blindly; they examined the Scriptures daily. Formation Bible Study's AI assistant can make errors, reflect biases, or produce outputs that are incomplete or theologically imprecise. We take this seriously. If you encounter an AI response that appears doctrinally problematic, factually wrong, or harmful, please report it via the Error Reporting page or email [email protected]. Your feedback helps us improve.
Formation Bible Study's study system has four progressive levels. Foundation is for new or returning Bible readers — building familiarity with Scripture through guided reading plans and simple observation tools. Formation Bible Study introduces the inductive method, cross-references, and beginning word study. Scholar adds original language tools, commentary access, and theological context. Teacher is for those preparing to lead — sermon prep tools, group study guides, and accountability structures. You can start at any level, and Formation Bible Study adapts to where you are.
Faith & Doctrine
Formation Bible Study is non-denominational and broadly evangelical. We affirm the core doctrines of historic Christianity — the authority of Scripture, the Trinity, the deity of Christ, salvation by grace through faith, the bodily resurrection, and the Great Commission. We do not take positions on secondary matters where serious Bible-believing Christians disagree, such as modes of baptism, cessationism vs. continuationism, or millennial views. Our Statement of Faith sets out what we do affirm clearly.
The Berean Standard Bible is accurate, readable, and freely available under an open license — which means Formation Bible Study can include the entire text without royalty fees or usage restrictions. This keeps the app affordable. The name also aligns with our founding vision: the Bereans of Acts 17:11 who "received the word with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day." The BSB is the right fit for an app that exists to equip those same kinds of students. Future translations will be added as licensing allows.
Formation Bible Study is a technology company — specifically, Berean Defense LLC, a limited liability company. We are not a church, not a parachurch ministry, and not a nonprofit. We are a business that builds tools to serve the church. Formation Bible Study does not replace your local church, your pastor, or your community. It is designed to enhance and deepen the Bible study that happens alongside those relationships — not substitute for them.
Account & Privacy
We take data protection seriously. Your notes, journals, and prayer records are private by default — they are never visible to other users unless you explicitly choose to share them. We do not sell your personal data to third parties. When you use the AI Study Assistant, only your query and the Bible passage you are studying are sent to Anthropic's API — not your name, notes, or billing information. Full details are in our Privacy Policy and AI Features Disclosure.
Yes — Formation Bible Study is built with offline study in mind. The Berean Standard Bible and your downloaded reading plans are available without an internet connection. Your notes, highlights, and journal entries are saved locally and synced to the cloud when connectivity returns. The AI Study Assistant, community features, and real-time syncing require an internet connection. You will never be locked out of your Bible text because of a network issue.
Absolutely — Formation Bible Study's community features are designed for exactly this. You can create a private study group (4–12 people), share a reading plan, post observations in a shared discussion thread, and hold one another accountable. Formation Pro adds formal accountability partnerships. Groups are private by default — no one can join your group without an invitation. This makes Formation Bible Study useful for couples, small groups, Sunday school classes, and discipleship pairs.
Formation Bible Study does not permit users under the age of 13, in compliance with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). Users between 13 and 17 may use Formation Bible Study only with verifiable parental consent. If we discover that a user under 13 has created an account, the account will be suspended and all personal data deleted within 30 days. Formation Bible Study is designed for adult and young adult Bible study. Full details are in our Children's Privacy Notice.
"Now these were more noble-minded than those in Thessalonica, for they received the word with great eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see whether these things were so."
Acts 17:11 — Berean Standard Bible
This is the standard Formation Bible Study holds itself to as well. Test everything we build against the Word — including us. If something in the app doesn't line up with Scripture, we want to know about it.
